How Much Do We Want Social Mobility, Anyway?

01/01/70 Source: Chicagomag.com

It's kind of an early adopter theory: when something is shown to benefit one's children, people with more education and/or higher incomes will have first crack at it, and it will take awhile for new approaches to spread into society as a whole.

The Rapunzel equation

And it turns out that there is a simple theory. The crucial characteristics are elasticity, density and curliness, which essentially tell how springy a piece of hair is, plus the length of the ponytail. The researchers came up with a simple formula

Flawed Oil Forecasts Hide Continued Upward Pressure On Prices

Rather than burden you with one more theory and price target, I intend to look deeper at models and forecasts that already exist. My hope is that you will have a better sense what is logical, what is wild speculation, and what you should expect for oil

Do you people have any basic idea of how corporations are run?

Q: Companies are owned by shareholders. These people are mostly middle class. The tax on "rich" is not really possible. There are so many flaws in this theory ... 1. the middle class are the second owners of these companies.

That is how they are held, more or less.

Economics books suggestion?

Q: I'm essentially looking for what I assume to be 2 books on Economics. I'm a student doing an MSc in Finance and I have read a fair amount about Economics so I wouldn't prefer introductory or layman books, though I wouldn't prefer textbooks either but if that's the only choice

A: The best book I can recommend is Paul Samuelson's Economics: an Introductory Analysis
You will find it in the university's library

The Myth of Strict Constructionism and Conservative Judicial Restraint

U.S. Supreme Court has recently completed his term 2010-2011 with another decision that calls into question how coherent conservative legal philosophy of judicial restraint really is. The decision pitted the State of California against the Merchants Association Entertainment. The court ruled that California could not restrict the sale of violent video games to persons under 18 years on the basis of freedom of expression. Curiously, they did rule that child pornography may be restricted in a 2008 decision. I will write more about that later.

THEORY OF ELASTICITY CLASSROOM

Theory of Elasticity | Free Books Source

It is an encyclopaedia of the classic and analytic approaches of continuum mechanics and of many domains of natural science. The book is unique also because an imive number of methods and approaches it displays have been worked out by the author himself. In particular, this implies a full consistency of notation, ideas and mathematical apparatus which results in a unified approach to a broad class of problems. The book is of great interest for engineers who will find a lot of analytical formulae for very different problems covering nearly all aspects of the elastic behavior of materials. In particular, it fills the gap between the well-developed numerical methods and sophisticated methods of elasticity theory. It is also intended for researchers and students taking their first steps in continuum mechanics as it offers a carefully written and logically substantiated basis of both linear and nonlinear continuum mechanics.
